ACTIVITY Check through a bulletin on TV and/or radio and check out how many stories the news editor would have known about in advance. For each, identify the source of the story. Keep the results of your research as they will almost certainly come in useful in the exam. 39 NEWS MANUFACTURE AND PRODUCTION Many stories come from various sources within the government. Some of these are simply factual information that the government wants people in the country to know. Other stories are part of what is known as ‘spin’.

You should notice immediately that the focus of this question is news values and news sources. If you feel confident that you have a good grasp of these two core concepts within this topic, then this is the question for you. Note that the question asks you to consider which factors.
