Where this is not so, training might be seen as little more than a process of enculturation, or of the blind leading the blind. The need for training to perpetuate values and practices through time – what, as I explained in the previous chapter, Dewey called the ‘social continuity’ of human life – apparently calls for training to be both conservative and progressive; not only to pass-on expertise but also to pass-on the ability to pass-on expertise, and to modulate expertise in response to changing demands.

Although the ancient world ‘prefer[ed] sight, generally speaking, to all other senses’ because, as Aristotle wrote, ‘of all the senses, sight best helps us to know things, and reveals many distinctions’,9 even the ancients knew that this sense could deceive. Plato, after all, used a visual allegory of the shadows on the cave wall to represent the inadequacy of human perception. 11 Today the phrase ‘the camera never lies’ sounds quaint and ironic – perhaps it always did – and in the sphere of training, now as before, expertise in practice is as much about spotting problems and seeing opportunities as it is about getting a feel for the right and the wrong way to do things.

46 ANATOMY OF PERFORMANCE TRAINING Despite its association with right judgement, in the field of performance, the hand can dissemble. While it took until the nineteenth century for the neurologist Guillaume Duchenne to show how the electro-neurology of the facial muscles can produce deceiving effects, simulation has been the preserve of the hand since the first known literature on performance. In his macabre experiments with patients of facial muscular dystrophy, whereby Duchenne attached electrodes so as to produce expressions on otherwise expressionless faces, Duchenne, inadvertently, revealed another dimension to Diderot’s famous paradox of acting: that outward appearance and inward sentiment might discord was a self-evident fact but that this discord might result from electrical activity in the tissues of the body was unknown.
