Ionising Radiation Radiation to the breast in high doses has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer, whether the radiation was from nuclear explosion, from treatment of acute post partum mastitis, women who received fluoroscopy or who are radiated for tinea capititis. Exposure of the breasts to radiation at ages 10-19 is associated with a particularly high risk, with the greatest risk associated with perimenarchial exposure. This suggests that breast tissue is particularly vulnerable at this time, because either the breasts are developing rapidly or because most women have not yet given birth.
