This life in the depths, this power which seems to force itself upon consciousness in times of crisis, may be called the collective unconscious or the ground and power of being, but the reality thus designated functions with the force of the divine.  With Tillich, this is based on man's native participation in God; with Jung, on man's experience of the power of the archetypal symbols arising from the unconscious.  But for Tillich and Jung the dynamic symbolized by the Trinity arises from man's depth experience of his own life processes, human and divine.

Hence, like Tillich, Jung is of the opinion that a symbol contains an element that defies rational precision.  In this sense the symbol is invested with a numinosity grounded in the depths of both mind and outer reality.  This heightening of consciousness through contact with its inner source will eventually bring with it a deeper appreciation of and a freer response to one's surrounding reality at all levels. "12 For Tillich too the symbol rises to consciousness from an area over which mind and will have no direct manipulative power.
