The library catalog is the most obvious and well-known part of a library and may be the first access tool to which students turn. There are problems, however, with relying on the library catalog. Most catalogs provide detailed subject access only to books, and only to those books owned by the library. Books provide only one type of information, and the information is often dated because the lag between the time a work is written and the time it is published is often considerable.

In this chapter we describe in some detail the steps involved in the research process. Later chapters fill out many of the concepts presented. For example, in this chapter we refer briefly to some characteristics of electronic databases and procedures for searching them, even though we won’t thoroughly explain them until Chapter 3. We also refer in this chapter to different types of access tools and publications that are covered in detail in Part 2. For this reason, we suggest you read this chapter now to set the stage and then review it after you’ve finished reading Part 2.

4. All subject headings under which a particular book can be searched are listed in the subject field at the bottom of the catalog record. It may be appropriate to search one or more of them for related sources. Consider adding them to your subject-headings list.
